Chengdu Greenland Tower

Chengdu / China

Architects: Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill
Developer: Greenland Group

When complete, the Chengdu Greenland Tower, a supertall skyscraper in Sichuan will reach 468 meters (1,535 feet) into the sky and house 101 floors, making it the tallest building in southwestern China. The tower’s faceted exterior is an architectural representation of peaks and valleys on Sichuan’s Ice Mountain; the exterior lighting design is formed in conjunction with these shapes, tracing the architectural elements with embedded channels that conceal linear lighting. As darkness falls, these channels begin to glow and change dynamically, fading out and bleeding together like sunlight and moonlight glazing the mountain’s grand and craggy contours.
